Protecting a Concrete Containment Area from Severe Hydrochloric Acid Corrosion

Industry: Quartz Mining
Location: North Carolina, USA
Application: Concrete Containment Area
Chemical Exposure: Hydrochloric acid at 35% concentration
Previous System: Polyurea
Solution: COROCAST® VE Polymer Concrete and COROFLAKE® 24 VE Mat-Reinforced Coating
Expected Service Life: 15 years

The Challenge

A quartz mining facility in North Carolina needed to restore a concrete containment area that had experienced severe corrosion and deterioration from exposure to hydrochloric acid at a 35% concentration. The existing protection system was polyurea.

The project also needed to be completed without interrupting plant operations, making careful execution essential.

The Solution

The deteriorated concrete was removed and replaced with COROCAST® VE Polymer Concrete to restore the area to the required floor level. The repaired surface was then protected with a COROFLAKE® 24 VE mat-reinforced top coating.

The complete system included:

  • COROCAST® VE Polymer Concrete to replace the deteriorated concrete and restore the floor level
  • COROFLAKE® 24 VE Mat-Reinforced Coating to provide a protective top layer

The Result

The project was successfully completed without interrupting plant operations. The new system restored the deteriorated containment area and provided a protective surface for the chemical-exposure environment. Installed in July 2020, the system has an expected service life of 15 years.

Protect Critical Concrete Infrastructure

Chemical exposure can cause significant deterioration of concrete containment areas and other critical facility surfaces. REMA TIP TOP delivers industrial surface protection systems designed around the specific conditions and operational requirements of each application.
